More trains in the base tunnel again
February 7, 2024
According to SBB, the restoration of regular operations in the Gotthard Base Tunnel is currently proceeding according to plan. In addition to the track repairs, the two high-speed switches at the Faido multi-function station have been replaced. SBB expects to be able to resume normal operations in September 2024.
According to SBB, more trains will be able to travel through the Gotthard Base Tunnel starting in March. Starting in early March, an additional seven passenger trains will run on weekends. Likewise, significantly more freight trains could travel through the base tunnel starting March 25. In cooperation with the freight and passenger railway companies and the independent train path allocation authority, SBB has carefully considered the train path allocation on the Gotthard axis starting in March 2024 and over the Easter holidays to accommodate the different needs of freight and passenger traffic.
A special timetable will be in effect on the Gotthard axis at Easter. Travelers to and from Ticino will have access to additional trains and more seats, both through the base tunnel and the panoramic route. Photos: SBB
. Significantly more freight trains will also be able to run. The capacity expansion is possible because from this point on, trains will also be able to travel through the undamaged northern third of the western tunnel during the week. Thanks to the increased capacity, freight traffic can be shifted from the Simplon axis to the Gotthard axis. This is of great importance in the summer, because the line between Arona and Stresa will be completely closed to train traffic from June 9 to September 8, 2024, due to construction work on the four-meter corridor on the Domodossola–Milan line.
