Mars, manufacturer of brands such as Snickers, Twix, M&M2, Pedigree and Whiskas, is launching a pioneering project in Germany together with the logistics group Rigterink, Shippeo and Elain to gain deeper insights into fuel types, consumption and CO2 emissions.
The goal is to reduce the environmental impact of product movements, specifically the company's carbon footprint, by using more precise transport movement data. Real-time transparency and fuel composition data are collected via various systems and devices. Platform innovations are intended to improve data quality, user-friendliness, and collaboration within the supply chain ecosystem with customers and suppliers.
Detailed analyses will be used to identify and implement potential improvements. This step is part of Mars, Incorporated's global commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The globally operating company aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions along its value chain (Scope 1-3) by 50% worldwide by 2030. The active, phased decarbonization of its logistics plays a key role in achieving this goal.
Shippeo and Elain, a joint venture of vehicle manufacturer Scania, aim to automate the traditionally manual process of data collection and calculation in logistics, resulting in a precise visualization of emissions per order, recipient, and logistics company. By combining real-time transport data from Shippeo, primary fleet data from Rigterink (including vehicle type, route, and total load), and specific fuel type data from the fuel supplier, the Elain platform will next be able to provide precise emissions for less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments, thus further improving the accuracy of the data provided by Shippeo's Carbon Visibility solution.
Björn Schlenker, Supply Chain Director at Mars Germany: “Through the collaboration with Shippeo and Elain, we gain valuable insights into our entire logistics in Germany to optimize our processes and reduce our transport operations.”
Anand Medepalli, Chief Product Officer at Shippeo: “The ability to integrate extensive primary data with our Carbon Visibility solution offers our customers unprecedented accuracy and reliability in emissions monitoring.”
Viet-Anh Pitaval, Head of Business at Elain: “The partnership with Mars Germany, Rigterink and Shippeo is an important step towards using data for greater sustainability in logistics. At Elain, we are committed to providing accurate emissions data so that informed decisions can be made to reduce the carbon footprint.”
