While others in the fiercely competitive industry are once again suffering billions in losses and fearing for jobs, the Swiss Steel Group, winner of the German (!) Sustainability Award 2023, is leveraging its lead in "green steel." Based in Düsseldorf and Lucerne, it promotes decarbonization across borders.

The Swiss Steel Group is one of the largest electric steel producers in Europe. Following the motto "Yes, we can!", the group primarily uses recycled steel scrap. This eliminates the high CO₂ emissions of traditional blast furnace processes (which are later used to build, among other things, high-bay warehouses).

The company management says that, in combination with the increased use of renewable energy, the CO₂ balance will be further improved and CO₂ emissions significantly reduced.

Following its win of the 2023 Sustainability Award, the Swiss Steel Group, headquartered in both Lucerne and Düsseldorf, will remain connected to the award through a sponsorship partnership. CEO Frank Koch: "We are convinced that we must actively shape the transformation of the steel industry."

Swiss Steel Group (SSG) has become the first supplier on the market to introduce lead-free free-cutting steel, according to a press release. The steel, designated 11SMn30+BX, which does without the heavy metal sc, meets all requirements for machinability and precision and is an environmentally friendly alternative for industrial production. Furthermore, SSG offers the "Green Steel" option for all its steel grades, featuring a significantly reduced CO₂ footprint, thus enabling customers to achieve their preferred sustainability goals.

Previously, negotiations with scrap metal dealers focused primarily on price. At the Swiss Steel Group, they are fully integrated system partners who are paid for quality and on-time delivery. A five-stage process maturity model ensures continuous improvement of scrap quality. In a joint project with scrap suppliers and several universities, the Swiss Steel Group is developing a digital twin for incoming scrap. This big data project allows the steelworks to identify the exact type of scrap being delivered in advance. According to the company, in Germany, France, and Switzerland, the scrap for the Swiss Steel Group's plants comes predominantly from within a radius of 90 to 100 km. This also minimizes the environmental impact of transportation.
