Recognizing qualifications
February 11, 2021
Good training is a key advantage: Dennis Famiglietti (Swiss Skills 2020)
The economic ties between Switzerland and Germany are close, and the cross-border mobility of skilled workers is correspondingly high. The agreements on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications have now been updated and expanded.
Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, and German Education Minister Anja Karliczek have signed to continue the proven practice and extend it to additional areas. The Federal Council gave its approval on February 3.
Due to the economic interconnections and numerous commuters in the border region, is important that professional qualifications are recognized as equivalent for practicing a profession and for accessing further education in the other country.
The new agreement reflects developments in vocational education and training in both countries and expands its scope. As a result, a larger number of holders of vocational qualifications than before will benefit from simplified conditions in the future.
Shania Colombo (Swiss Skills 2020)
The bilateral agreement with Germany complements the existing European system for the recognition of professional qualifications, in which Switzerland, like most European countries, participates. It is based on the particularly close relationship between the vocational education and training systems of Switzerland and Germany and the shared understanding of the importance and quality of vocational education. With this contribution to the permeability of the related education systems, the two countries are also sending a signal for the strengthening of dual vocational education and training at the national and international levels.
In a conversation following the signing, State Secretary Hirayama and Education Minister Karliczek discussed further deepening cooperation in education and research in the bilateral and European context.
