Greater protection against disasters in the future
March 19, 2026
Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler increased its revenue from CHF 3.3 billion to CHF 3.7 billion in the past fiscal year 2025, despite challenging conditions. Order intake amounted to CHF 6.1 billion. In Valencia, following the severe weather disaster, partially rebuild and strengthen its affected supply chains.
ORION train in Andermatt
The recovery measures implemented after the Valencia floods (as previously reported) showed initial results and led to further improvements in the second half of the year. Nevertheless, the severe weather event at the end of October 2024 and the associated damage to suppliers and infrastructure continue to negatively impact supply chains, production, and the bottom line. Stadler was forced to develop alternative sources of supply and adapt production processes.
Storm damage continues to have an effect
Supply chain stability, it was reported, had noticeably improved by the end of 2025. However, the effects of the massive flooding are expected to linger until 2027. Despite the recovery program launched by Stadler in 2025, the flood disaster impacted costs and the delivery of rail vehicles. CHF 350 million in revenue could not be achieved in 2024.
Factory in Valencia
In addition to the aftermath of the severe weather in Valencia, the economic situation in Germany continues to negatively impact the results. Stadler has been consistently implementing its efficiency improvement program at its Berlin site since the beginning of 2025. A future-oriented collective bargaining agreement signed with the IG Metall union in April 2025 is helping to strengthen competitiveness.
Securing locations in Berlin
Last year, Stadler employees at the Berlin Pankow plant agreed to work 40 hours per week instead of 38 in exchange for job security. The internal efficiency improvement program is already showing initial results at the Berlin Pankow plant: productivity has increased across the entire value chain.
Hydrogen train for Mount Etna
However, the increasingly strong Swiss franc is putting a strain on the export industry. This exchange rate situation is also reducing Stadler's consolidated revenue by over 50 million Swiss francs. Meanwhile, Stadler expects to receive orders for up to 1,500 metro cars from the Berlin transport authority (BVG) by the end of December 2026. The same applies to the contract won by the Berlin S-Bahn for 350 trains. Berlin residents have been waiting for new S-Bahn trains since 2020. The deadline for submitting the bids has been repeatedly postponed for years.
“ Buy America Act ” in sight
The tariffs imposed by US President Trump have affected Stadler – but not to their full extent. Due to the " Buy America Act ," Stadler has been required since 2016 to demonstrably generate at least 70 percent of its value creation in the USA. At the end of September 2025, Stadler commissioned its own aluminum welding facility for car bodies at its Salt Lake City plant, a project planned long before Trump. This further increased the local value creation share in the USA.
In Andermatt, the first ORION train equipped with a globally new "v+" rack-and-pinion braking system, developed by MGBahn and Stadler, was presented. It will operate on the Andermatt-Göschenen line, which has a gradient of 181 per mille, and thanks to the new technology, it can safely descend at speeds of up to 30 km/h instead of the previous 21 km/h.
Contract signed with FCE
Stadler hydrogen trains will soon be operating around the volcanic landscape of Mount Etna. The railway company Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) has ordered two custom-designed narrow-gauge trains powered by hydrogen. Stadler is the market leader in alternative drive systems. No other manufacturer in Europe sells more rail vehicles with sustainable, CO2 - free battery and hydrogen drives.
For the 2026 financial year and the following years, Stadler confirms its expectation of sales well over CHF 5 billion. CEO Markus Bernsteiner: “Our efforts following the environmental disasters have paid off. The combination of a very solid order backlog, more stable supply chains, and the consistent efficiency improvement program is proving effective.”
