, especially at sea, are often distributed across multiple agencies and systems. Marcel Haar, CEO of Frequentis , proposes a shared maritime situational awareness picture. This would also protect supply chains.

Of course, not entirely altruistically: With cross-industry experience in civil aviation, defense, public safety, shipping, and public transport, Frequentis is further expanding its focus on voice communication in control centers. In times like these, the global corporation with over 2,600 employees sees itself as the market leader in high-tech systems for civil and military air traffic management, police, rescue services, fire departments, rail, and shipping (public safety and transport). Its maritime solutions portfolio ranges from maritime communication systems and GMDSS/SAR and incident management systems to shipping services and coastal surveillance systems.

Identifying threats

Authorities, Haar explains, must identify threats, warn of extreme weather events, and coordinate accidents. To react as early and precisely as possible, they need a reliable overview of the situation. But on the coast, says Marcel Haar, it's not just " one " coast guard at work. Instead, numerous actors are involved – government agencies as well as volunteer organizations. " Responsibilities are shared among several parties, and tasks sometimes overlap. A robust digital infrastructure could connect all those involved and create unified communication . "

The individual data sets that authorities and emergency services need for their daily work are still mostly scattered across different sources. While there is ample availability of weather and water levels, images from drones and helicopters, emergency reports, AIS and radar information, as well as sensor data from buoys and measuring stations, each stakeholder has a different level of knowledge. A common and integrated data platform for all stakeholders is often lacking.

Harmonize communication

Communication should be harmonized. Actors in the maritime sector need common radio standards and digital radio or IP-based communication channels that can be used across different authorities. Authorities also rely on secure and redundant communication channels in crisis situations such as blackouts or widespread disruptions.
