SBB Cargo handles one-seventh of Switzerland's freight traffic, transporting 180,000 tons daily in wagonload, block train, and combined transport within the country. The maintenance facility in Chiasso, renovated at a cost of CHF 12 million, has now reopened. A significant milestone, it says.

The expansion of maintenance south of the Alps, including the reprofiling of SBB locomotives, freight cars, and multiple units, took 18 months to complete. With a total area of 2,000 square meters, the new workshop is longer and wider than its predecessor. It also boasts a fourth additional track, the reprofiling line. The new workshop will employ around 30 people, 20 of whom will be responsible for freight car maintenance, eight for reprofiling, and three for technology and administration. This brings the total number of employees working in the service facility, including the existing locomotive maintenance workshop, to 50. While the new members of the reprofiling team are being trained for their future activities on the new production line and modern machinery, maintenance work on the freight cars will begin on the three tracks with new pits and modern lifting and crane systems.

"With the expanded freight car hall and the new underfloor lathe, we are strengthening our maintenance services for locomotives and freight cars in Chiasso," says Jasmin Bigdon, a member of the management team responsible for Asset Management at SBB Cargo. "This will enable us to further accelerate maintenance and reduce vehicle downtime – not only for SBB vehicles, but also for maintenance customers who rely on our services along the transit route."
SBB Cargo's new workshop was built on the site of the old workshop, which, after 60 years of service, no longer met today's requirements. However, the basic features of the former building were incorporated into the new hall and given a contemporary interpretation. Modern, large glass door fronts, a sophisticated roof structure, and optimal space ensure a friendly, safe working environment with plenty of natural daylight. The highlight of the new workshop is the underfloor lathe. SBB Cargo is thus creating a central one-stop shop for the reprofiling of locomotives, freight cars, and multiple units. Due to the efficient processing of all work at one location and the direct return of the vehicles to operation after reprofiling, SBB Cargo's locomotive turnaround times can be reduced by up to a third, increasing vehicle availability. The cross-border TILO trains also benefit from the services on the underfloor lathe near their operational area.
