Following the accident in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, 22 carriages and two locomotives have been pulled from the tunnel so far. According to SBB, eight carriages were still in the tunnel as of yesterday. The recovery work is expected to continue until the end of September, and repairs on the line will take months.
Several wagons were so badly damaged that they had to be dismantled in the tunnel before being transported away. The wagons will be recovered via the south portal, which is approximately 15 km from the accident site. For this purpose, a temporary track had to be built in some places.
The undamaged eastern tube has been serving freight traffic again for two weeks. Solutions are being sought for passenger trains so that they can also travel through the base tunnel on weekends. A timeline is difficult to predict. Nevertheless, clearing work at the accident site in the western tube is progressing according to plan. Actual repairs cannot begin until the clearance and recovery work is completed at the end of September.

Although SBB has reserve equipment, it does not have the quantity required for this extraordinary scale. As already communicated, it will take several months to repair the damage.
Since August 23, four freight trains have been able to travel consecutively through the undamaged eastern tunnel. These are followed by four freight trains from the opposite direction. Currently, around 90 of a maximum of 100 freight trains per day are running through the base tunnel via the panoramic route, with an additional 15 to 20 freight trains per day.
