Explosion-proof in confined spaces
April 6, 2024
With its three electric low-lift trucks, the T16 EX to T20 EX, Linde Material Handling will soon be showcasing explosion-proof load transport in confined spaces at the Achema trade fair in Frankfurt. The AI-based "Reverse Assist Camera" is now also of increased value in explosion-proof spaces.
"Every new explosion-proof vehicle model from Linde MH is developed starting with the pilot series of the production vehicle. This allows customers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, or food industries to benefit promptly from the advantages of these technical advancements," explains Elke Karnarski, Product Manager EX-Proof Trucks & Safety Solutions.
The T16 EX to T20 EX pedestrian-operated forklifts, with their robust chassis and reinforced forks, are designed for load capacities of up to 2 t. The models are available in the 2G/2D and 3G/3D categories for ATEX zones 1/21 and 2/22. Thanks to their short, narrow design, tight turning radius, and intuitive steering and operation, the forklifts are incredibly maneuverable.
EX protection measures include ignition protection against electrical and mechanical sparks, constant temperature monitoring of relevant components and precautions to prevent electrostatic charging.
The Reverse Assist Camera is now also available in device categories 2G/2D (ATEX Zone 1/21) and 3G/3D (ATEX Zone 2/22). Developed with the help of artificial intelligence, the camera has "learned" to distinguish between people and objects. If people are detected, visual and acoustic warning signals are issued depending on the distance. In addition, an automatic reduction in travel speed can be activated to further minimize the risk of accidents. For use in ATEX Zone 1/21, the display and camera are housed in pressure-resistant enclosures. "The demand for safety assistance systems for explosion-protected industrial trucks has increased noticeably in recent years," explains Product Manager Elke Karnarski. "This is not least due to the fact that they are often part of a mixed fleet with standard equipment. Existing assistance systems should then be installed across all vehicles to achieve a consistently high level of safety," the Product Manager explains.
Customer-specific solutions developed for specific applications are also not uncommon with explosion-proof industrial trucks. One example is the "Drum Tipper." This high-lift truck launched by Linde with an additional attachment can transport 300-liter drums, as well as grip and tip open drums, and safely empty any liquids contained within. An integrated scale operates with an accuracy of 500 grams. The drum clamp functions can be operated either via a control lever or remotely.
