Despite the recent derailment of a freight train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel—a hardware incident, so to speak—a quick glance at the IT infrastructure of the construction of the century reveals that one of the main arteries of transalpine (freight) traffic is well protected against cyberattacks. Eraneos has ensured that the infrastructure is secure from hackers.
The Zurich-based management and technology consulting group, which offers services ranging from the development of digital business models and data analytics to cybersecurity, sourcing, and IT consulting for complex transformation projects, emerged from the merger of Ginkgo Management Consulting, Quint Group, and AWK Group announced in 2021. DCP and SMP joined in 2022. With approximately 1,075 experts and offices in Switzerland, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, China, Singapore, and the USA, the group supports clients on three continents in exploiting digitalization potential.
According to CEO Oliver Vaterlaus, it was clear early on that the demands on the performance and complexity of the electronic tunnel infrastructure, the required lifecycle of the operating technology, the hardware and software involved, and the high availability requirements for flawless planning and implementation of cybersecurity were considerable.
The engineers at Alp Transit Gotthard, responsible for the axis of the new railway connection through the Alps, turned to Eraneos for assistance in developing a cybersecurity framework. This included establishing reporting and communication, assigning responsibilities and tasks, and defining, implementing, and monitoring security measures. "It was a major project, but one we didn't shy away from," says Vaterlaus.
" Cybersecurity in the tunnel's operational environment was a critical factor, requiring comprehensive cooperation and coordination from all parties." Eraneos established roles, tasks, and responsibilities within the project organization—and regular security reporting to the operator.
As part of the security measures, modern hardening and protection measures such as management and network access controls were implemented. Network security was ensured through multi-stage testing and audits. Cybersecurity efforts have become an integral part of the overall project. Today, the AlpTransit Gotthard Tunnel boasts a high level of cybersecurity. Continuous improvements, recurring tests and audits, and lifecycles ensure safe, reliable, and fast transportation around the clock.
After all, it is also a prominent working environment for new members of the Board of Directors at Eraneos, who were recently appointed as Astrid Rauchfuss and Daniel Ritz.
Rauchfuss, Ritz
Rauchfuss, who holds an MBA from Insead and an MSc in Physics from LMU Munich, has worked in the technology and telecommunications industry for over 23 years, specializing in strategic programs. She is a former managing director and partner of a global consulting firm and has led B2B telecommunications companies around the world. In addition, Astrid Rauchfuss has held various positions at Bell Labs, Lucent, Siemens, and the Fraunhofer Society.
Daniel Ritz has worked and lived in both developed and emerging markets in Europe, the USA, the Middle East, and Asia. After a long career in the telecommunications industry, Ritz is currently Spokesperson for the Management Board of the Walter Group, based in Vienna. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of Beyon, where he represents the Bahraini sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat. Astrid Rauchfuss and Daniel Ritz will join the Eraneos Group in February 2024.
