Advance warning with voice announcement

Hyster is expanding its range of warning and assistance systems with a sophisticated camera system  for pedestrian detection. It complements the "Hyster Reaction" driver assistance system. The camera precisely detects pedestrians at a distance of up to five meters through a 110-degree field of view.

The system is available with audible, visual, and optional traction warnings. If a pedestrian is detected, a voice announcement indicates that a pedestrian is near the forklift. A light on the display also shows the zone in which the person is located.

Available traction alarms go a step further. They automatically and  gradually brake the forklift while the driver retains control of the vehicle. This braking effect is intended to attract the driver's attention so that they can avoid the detected pedestrian by braking and/or swerving.

Crucial safety factor

“Drivers’ situational awareness is a crucial factor for the safety of pedestrians and forklifts. With our ongoing investments in Hyster Reaction assistance solutions, we want to offer drivers additional support for working cautiously,” says Daniel Heap, Manager, Product & Commercial – Technology & Connected Fleet at Hyster. “With the pedestrian warning system, we are pursuing our goal of providing drivers with easily understandable and user-friendly technologies that work reliably in real-world applications – whether in lumberyards, on construction sites , or in heavy industry.”

Extensive photographic data from work environments were used in the development of the pedestrian detection system . The system adapts to various lighting and environmental conditions and can be used both indoors and outdoors. The system is designed for a maximum driving speed of 8 km/h.

The camera is mounted on the rear side of the forklift, away from the forks. The warning signals are deactivated as soon as the identified pedestrian leaves the camera's field of view or the forklift moves forward and away from the pedestrian behind it.

In several configurations

The system is available in several configurations, either with only audible and visual alarms or additionally with traction alarms that activate speed reduction. The "Hyster Reaction" driver assistance system has been available internationally since 2021.  Since then, the technology has been used for more than 24 million operating hours in over 8,300 forklifts .
