Traction control perfected

June 13, 2022

Sensors in the front steering axle of the Combilift FSE allow for individual control of the two 15 kW drive motors on the rear axle. The speed of each wheel is regulated by the steering angle of the front wheels. This reduces the turning radius as well as tire wear.

Irish forklift manufacturer Combilift has further expanded its already extensive range of electric forklifts with the market launch of the Combi-FSE - a four-wheeled, two-way side loader available with a lifting capacity of 5000 kg or 6000 kg.

Over 60% of the Irish company's Monaghan-based product range is now electric. Recent models like the Combi-XLE and the Combi-FSE focus on more demanding applications in industries such as timber, steel, pipes, and building materials. Thanks to Combilift's immense development and engineering expertise, the Combi-FSE meets all the requirements for reliability, durability, performance, and ease of maintenance, naturally combined with the quiet and emission-free electric operation that more and more customers are demanding.

The patented traction system of this new product significantly contributes to the optimal performance of the Combi-FSE in all weather conditions. Sensors in the front steering axle, connected to the innovative electronic traction control system, allow for individual control of the two independent 15 kW drive motors on the rear axle. The speed of each wheel is regulated by the steering angle of the front wheels, giving the driver better steering control, improving the forklift's turning radius, and reducing tire wear. Combined with regenerative braking (which recovers the forklift's kinetic energy during deceleration and can be used to recharge the batteries, thus extending their lifespan), this new technology represents the most advanced steering system to date for Combilift's four-wheeled forklifts.

The cab's generous glazing, especially the floor-to-ceiling windshield, provides the operator with excellent visibility of the load, the machine, and the surroundings. To ensure optimal visibility, the battery system is integrated beneath the vehicle deck, with the battery pack strategically positioned at the rear of the forklift between the drive motors, thus preserving an unobstructed view to the rear and when reversing. This guarantees the best all-around visibility of any comparable forklift. This position also allows for safe and easy removal of the battery from the low-lying rear of the forklift.

Maintenance times have been reduced to a minimum, as the battery can be quickly replaced for shift operation, the lubrication points are centrally located at the front and rear of the loading platform, and the removable panels allow easy access to the engine.

“We launched our first 4-wheel side loader about ten years ago, after receiving initial inquiries from companies in the timber industry,” says CEO Martin McVicar. “Since then, it has become something of a standard solution for companies with intensive work schedules and high operating hours.”
