Toyota Material Handling's new automated underride device, the Autopilot CDI120, can be integrated into operational processes step by step or installed as a complete system in a single, targeted operation within a short time.

Just in time for LogiMAT, its latest development in warehouse automation: the automated guided vehicle (AGV)unveiled. The CDI120 was designed from the ground up as an autopilot, rather than modifying a conventional manual device. This allowed for a complete redesign of numerous features – from the form factor to navigation and safety features – to maximize the potential of AGV technology.

First of all: the CDI120 doesn't have forks. Instead, the driverless vehicle can pick up different load carriers by them underneathand lifting them. This is achieved using a through-station that provides precise positioning.

and ensures efficient handling of loads up to 1200 kg. With a differential drive, a built-in scanner, and various sensors in the chassis, the compact design of the CDI120 enables tight turning maneuvers and efficient operation even in areas with low ceilings.

During operation, the CDI120 can detect objects at a distance of up to 30 meters. Odometry and feature-based localization are used for precise navigation through the warehouse. The localization algorithm is so intelligent that it can even interpret dynamically added features in the environment. Front and side detection fields, blue LED warning lights, and an emergency stop switch are additional safety features.

The automated guided vehicle (AGV) operates seamlessly as part of an automated vehicle fleet and communicates with other Toyota AGV systems via T-ONE software. This software, developed in-house by Toyota, can integrate and monitor all warehouse facilities, triggering CDI120 transport orders manually (via a warehouse management system or call buttons) or through automated software. The forklifts can be configured for various preset routes (A-to-B, loop, or part of a multi-stage journey) and priorities, and these can be adjusted on the fly.

“An important goal in the development was to offer a cost-efficient goods transport system that works seamlessly with our forklifts and reach trucks, thus optimizing the ROI for our customers in their transport and stacking applications,” explains Product Manager Maria Carlsson.
