 GS1 Logistics Market Study 2025

According to recent figures, the total volume of the Swiss logistics market in 2023 , representing growth of 1.4% over the previous year. The first edition of the 2025 Logistics Market Study once again provides a comprehensive overview of the industry in Switzerland.

Among other things, the increasing pressure on e-commerce from Asian online retailers and potential cyber risks via logistics providers are interesting. "Names like Temu or Shein," says GS1 logistics expert Jan Eberle, "are often confronted with the prejudice that they are simply cheap products from China. But is that really the case? Many products that we source from Swiss companies also come from China."

On the other hand, companies are increasingly exposed to cyberattacks. Logistics companies even pose a potential risk to their customers. So how can companies protect themselves while simultaneously ensuring that they, in turn, do not become a risk to their customers?

The current edition determines the value volume of the Swiss logistics market for 2023, as well as an estimate for 2024 and a forecast for 2025.

The Swiss logistics market is estimated using three independent methods, ensuring the robustness and reliability of the results. The variation in the results of these three methods serves as an indicator of the range within which the logistics market volume fluctuates.

The logistics market's performance is in line with Switzerland's economic performance, which recorded a 1.6% increase in gross domestic product. While the global decline in demand has not left the Swiss economy unscathed, the market is proving to be relatively robust, "not least supported by a stable domestic market."

The supply-side approximation of the total volume of the Swiss logistics market is realized through an integrated methodology based on a detailed analysis of the vehicle fleet, transport volumes, transport turnover and logistics costs.

First, the determination of the vehicle fleet includes all vehicles registered in Switzerland as well as foreign vehicles that provide services in the country, with a detailed categorization according to modes of transport such as road, rail, air and water.

Sales broken down

Within road transport, a further breakdown is made into various weight classes, as well as between company and commercial transport. Transport turnover is then determined, with annual turnover for road vehicles being assigned based on their weight class and traffic conditions. To ensure accuracy, these turnover figures are set in relation to the transported tonnages of all modes of transport (including pipelines).

Finally, the logistics market size is determined, with transport costs serving as the basis for extrapolating the total costs of the logistics sector in Switzerland.

According to the methodological approach of Schwemmer & Klaus (2021), total costs are understood as the sum of transport costs, costs of warehousing and handling activities, costs for logistics planning and administration including order processing, and costs for inventories.

The extrapolation of the total costs of the logistics sector is based on the assumption that the costs of warehousing and handling activities, the costs of logistics planning and administration including order processing, and the costs of inventory are based on the transport volume.

What's striking? A look at the freight transport volumes in 2023 reveals a decline in transport performance of almost 6% in both road and rail freight transport. This reveals a striking discrepancy between the reduced demand for freight transport on the one hand and the capacity development on the other, as the vehicle fleet remains robust in 2023, with a slight increase. A total of 485,303 freight vehicles were registered in Switzerland in 2023, including 430,062 delivery vans (+2.1%) and 42,503 trucks (+0.7%).
