«EcoShip» wins logistics award
June 5, 2025

Nikolas Schaal, the program manager of the "EcoShip" project, could hardly believe it when TV presenter Mona Vetsch presented him with the coveted "Swiss Logistics Award" at the Kursaal in Bern, concluding the GS1 Excellence Day. Autonomous shipping is becoming a tangible reality.
It was a highly interesting final round, in which the digital, AI-supported assistance solution for increasing efficiency and reducing emissions in inland navigation – as reported – was nominated alongside a dynamic micro-hub for Level 4 automated inner-city logistics from Loxo & Planzer and the «Galliker Academy World» in the final for this year's Swiss Logistics Award.
In addition, companies were awarded the Lean & Green Award that evening for achieving their partial targets on the way to net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.
The logistics and supply chain management industry once again gathered for networking at the festive and highly regarded award ceremony, continuing late into the evening.
Fit for a sustainable future
With its now award-winning combination of real-time data and artificial intelligence, whose components, developed step by step on Lake Lucerne, have already proven their suitability in several versions across Europe, EcoShip maximizes the efficiency of ships and simultaneously makes them fit for a sustainable future.

An IoT data logger, "EcoLog," captures crucial operational and environmental data and makes it available in real time. "EcoLive" then visually processes the collected information via an analytics dashboard to enable informed decisions by crew and dispatchers. The AI-powered assistance system, "EcoPilot," uses machine learning and real-time data to optimize routing and driving speeds, reduce fuel consumption, and improve time management. Together, these components form the first system to combine real-time assistance, historical data analysis, and passenger forecasts in a holistic approach.

Jury president Renate Gröger-Frehner had the opportunity on the Kursaal stage to discuss with Mona Vetsch the decision, which remained open until the very end, regarding who would win the competition. Nikolas Schaal is part of an interdisciplinary team of naval architects, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and automation specialists who develop advanced concepts and solutions for marine technology at "Shiptec.".
Emission-free inland navigation
Shiptec is Switzerland's largest provider of design and construction services for passenger, cargo, and government vessels. As a pioneer in modern energy and propulsion technologies, the company makes significant contributions to the gradual transition to emission-free inland navigation for clients in the professional shipping industry, as well as for government agencies and freight transport companies.
In recent years, state-of-the-art ships such as the hybrid-powered, 63.5 m long «MS Diamant», the first climate-neutral passenger ship in Switzerland, as well as state-of-the-art, 800 hp patrol boats («Watercat 1250») for the military, and pushboats (MS Triton and MS Finn) for heavy transport, as well as the «EcoLog» for three vaporetti in Venice have been provided.

Schaal is a classic inventor with an ambitious background. He also works at Shiptec in Lucerne on a project for autonomous shipping, for which the digitized components of the "EcoShip" are paving the way. The engineer's modest and reserved demeanor suggests that further results from the shipyard on Lake Lucerne can be expected in the coming years.
At the recent SMM shipbuilding trade fair in Hamburg, a demonstrator featuring intelligent control levers for automated steering was presented. These levers can provide haptic feedback, allowing the captain to focus on visual cues for ship safety. Further use cases are being explored within an Innosuisse-funded project (2025–2027).
Numerous trade visitors, guests of the Excellence Day, the jury and also the competitors for the Swiss Logistics Award 2025 offered their congratulations.
