Cold chain logistics in transition

June 26, 2022

The focus day, jointly organized by the Swiss Association for Temperature-Controlled Logistics (SVTL) and GS1 Switzerland on September 8th in Zurich, will address the new opportunities that modern energy technology and IT offer for the cold chain and its logistics.

The array of speakers and experts who have announced their participation promises interesting insights into the current topic of the cold chain and the recently increased demands it faces. "The new technological possibilities," according to Georg Burkhardt, Managing Director of SVTL, and Jan Eberle, Head of the Industry and Transport Sector at GS1 Switzerland, "have brought a new dynamic to temperature-controlled logistics in recent years." For numerous companies, particularly in the food and pharmaceutical industries, this transformation presents not only opportunities but also significant challenges.

Contributors include researcher Christine Schäfer from the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute, who reports on trends in the food sector that – especially in the online sphere – are increasingly impacting logistics. Maike Scherrer (ZHAW) presents further results from her research project "Sustainable Supply Chains," and Peter Kuhn provides insights into the day-to-day operations of Züger Frischkäse AG. Raphael Pfarrer (AWK) and Eloy van der Smaan (Lagerhäuser Aarau) address the question of where to focus investments in the digitalization of companies.

Jörg Grimm, Professor of Supply Chain Management, Logistics & Procurement at Bern University of Applied Sciences, sheds light on the opportunities for logistics startups. Benno Burkhardt, co-owner of the startup "Stash," reports on food deliveries that take place within ten minutes, while Anna H. Roth-Gardlo discusses the challenges of refrigerated logistics at "LoLa's Kitchen." Emilija Damjanovic, e-food market and product developer at Swiss Post, is already well-known to many and sees a strong regional aspect in urban logistics.

Oliver Schwarz, Head of Strategy, Development and ICT at Voigt (Industrial Service), examines the commonalities in the requirements of food and pharmaceutical cold chains.

In a subsequent panel discussion moderated by SVTL Managing Director Georg Burkhardt, Andrea Krapf, Head of Logistics & Informatics at Migros Cooperative Zurich, Maike Scherrer (ZHAW), Emilija Damjanovic (Post CH) and Beda Viviani, Project Manager Logistics at Cargo sous terrain (CST), will have another opportunity to exchange critical views and outline perspectives for the future.

The themed focus day on September 8th is the largest industry event in temperature-controlled logistics in Switzerland.
