Kion restructures its management team

October 26, 2023

The Kion Group again achieved significant growth in the first three quarters of 2023. Michael Larsson was appointed Executive Board member responsible for the Supply Chain Solutions segment, and Ching Pong Quek was appointed Chief Technology Officer. Henry Puhl, previously CTO, intends to pursue entirely new opportunities outside of Kion.

According to company figures, sales in the first nine months rose to €8.347 billion (previous year: €8.243 billion), and profit before taxes increased more than two and a half times from €210 million to just under €572 million compared to the same period last year. The positive results, according to the Frankfurt company, were primarily driven by continued momentum in the forklift segment (Industrial Trucks & Services).

The main reasons for this were the stabilization of supply chains, which enabled higher production volumes, as well as the positive effects of the measures introduced in 2022 to increase economic and operational agility. "The strong results in the first nine months of this year once again clearly demonstrate the Kion Group's significant upward trend," says Kion CEO Rob Smith. "This strong momentum is strengthening our leading position." The service share of consolidated revenue rose to 44.6 percent (previous year: 41.7 percent). In the Industrial Trucks & Services segment, total revenue rose by 16.5 percent to €6.160 billion (previous year: €5.288 billion). The systematic execution of the well-filled order book from the previous year had a positive impact. In addition, the price increases implemented in the previous year contributed to the increase in revenue over the course of the year.

The continuously improved availability of materials and the easing of material prices on the supplier side contributed significantly to the earnings development of the forklift segment, which exceeded expectations.

Michael Larsson succeeds Hasan Dandashly, who will step down from the Executive Board and retire at the end of this year. "I am confident that with the appointment of Ching Pong Quek and Michael Larsson, we are excellently positioned to strengthen our leading position in automation and integrated solutions and further advance our profitable growth strategy," said Hans Peter Ring, Chairman of the Kion Supervisory Board.

CEO Rob Smith on the new CTO Ching Pong Quek: "As the longest-serving board member with a proven track record, he brings a deep multicultural background and diverse regional experience. (...) He has actively shaped the global platform and module strategy, mobile automation, and software development. His team-oriented leadership style, extensive experience in the material handling market, and strong customer focus make him the ideal successor to Henry Puhl."

Michael Larsson, who led SCS's Americas business as Executive Vice President for the past three years, brings more than 30 years of experience across four continents in technology-driven automation solutions. He will expand the integrated solutions strategy through flagship projects with top customers.

H.Puhl

Henry Puhl, who is leaving Kion at his own request to pursue other opportunities outside the intralogistics industry, has successfully restructured the technology division over the past two years, expanded the product and solution portfolio of the Kion brands, and driven innovations in the areas of energy, software, and warehouse management systems.
