“Fly-by-wire” with the cargo bike

Smart pedal vehicles (SPVs) are increasingly in demand. Switzerland already has leading manufacturers like the robust electric vehicles from Kyburz. Germany still has some catching up to do. The Munich-based startup CIP Mobility, which made it into the nominations at IFOY, is focusing more on "lightweight" vehicles.

The maintenance-free work and cargo bike made of plastic appears somewhat fragile, yet promises a range of 60 to 80 km and a 95% recycling rate. The use of recyclable plastics in its production, it is said, saves approximately 68% of carbon dioxide emissions compared to aluminum components. It is ideal for commercial users who want to operate sustainably, both on the last mile and on company premises or in their intralogistics.

The digital drive system uses pedals to power a generator, which in turn produces energy for the electric motor in the rear wheel – without relying on a chain or belt. The core innovation of the "Smart Pedal Vehicle," the maintenance-free "ride-by-wire" system (similar to the "fly-by-wire"technology that once sparked debate in aviation), doesn't reinvent the wheel entirely, but rather integrates it into the digital future of the city.

Conventional spokes are nowhere to be found here. Main structural components are made of recyclable, high-performance plastic, which, according to the manufacturer, saves two-thirds of CO2 emissions in production compared to conventional aluminum components. Mocci uses injection molding, which guarantees "high quality in large quantities" and can be implemented locally.

Potential applications for mocci can be found in various sectors such as logistics and warehouse mobility, campus mobility, food delivery, commercial transport of goods and tools, and service provision.
The e-bike market has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. Industry experts and market analysts predict rapid, positive development in the coming years.

How «mocci» will fare among the startups in the International Intralogistics and Forklift of the Year Award will be revealed after the electronically anonymized voting by the IFOY jury at the closing gala on June 14th at the Congress Center and Casino Baden in Vienna. Until then, the result remains a secret – both for the finalists and the public.
