Siemens charging stations for the US Postal Service

February 1, 2024

L. DeJoy

The US Postal Service (USPS) has begun equipping its sorting and delivery centers with charging stations for its planned fleet of more than 66,000 electric vehicles. This is part of the modernization of its aging delivery fleet under the ten-year "Delivering for America" plan.

The first 14,000 chargers for the Postal Service's electric vehicles are being manufactured by three suppliers: Siemens, Rexel/ChargePoint, and Blink. Yesterday's event also saw the unveiling of battery-electric COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) vehicles, which Ford plans to mass-produce. The USPS plans to procure a total of 21,000 of these electric vehicles – 9,250 of which will be from Ford. By 2028, at least 45,000 next-generation battery-electric delivery vehicles (NGDVs) are expected to be added, bringing the total number of electric vehicles in the delivery fleet to the aforementioned 66,000.

In the presence of White House officials, the first charging stations were unveiled at the South Atlanta Sorting and Delivery Center (S&DC). Charging stations like these are slated to be installed throughout the year at hundreds of new S&DCs nationwide to power the nation's largest electric vehicle fleet.

The electrification and modernization of the Postal Service's delivery fleet is part of a $40 billion investment strategy by the organization to modernize and improve the USPS's processing, transportation, and delivery networks.

"By transforming our operational processes and investing in new automation, new technologies, and modernized facilities and vehicles," said Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, "we will achieve significant efficiency gains that will reduce our costs, decrease our carbon footprint, and minimize waste. We are grateful for the support of Congress and the Biden administration through funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to allow the electrification visible here today."
