Fully electric cold chain

September 20, 2024

 Thermo King IAA 2024

Thermo King is presenting itself at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show as a pioneer in the electrification of the cold chain. The company is showcasing the future of urban refrigerated distribution with a next-generation portfolio for small and large trucks, multi-temperature systems, and comprehensive energy management solutions.

On the very opening day of IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover, the provider of temperature control solutions for transport presented a range of applications designed to accelerate the industry's transformation towards electrification while simultaneously meeting the traditional transport refrigeration requirements of commercial customers.

At IAA 2024, Thermo King will showcase new models of its E-Series electric transport refrigeration units for small to large trucks, the Advancer-e Spectrum electric multi-temperature trailer refrigeration unit, and digital and power management solutions for increased performance. This includes the continued success of the Thermo King AxlePower energy recovery and management system, as well as the Energ-e and E-Coolpac battery solutions.

“Our all-electric and hybrid product range at the IAA is an important step towards fulfilling our commitment to offer electric products in every segment of the cold chain by 2023,” says Claudio Zanframundo, President of Thermo King EMEA Truck, Trailer, Bus, Global Marine, Rail and Air. The launch of the Thermo King E-Series for large trucks, with a comprehensive range of high-capacity cooling models in single and multiple temperature configurations, represents a leap forward in electric refrigeration for trucks between 7.5 and 26 tons. These units are designed to offer unparalleled efficiency and sustainability. They enhance the operational capabilities of both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and can also be operated independently of the E-COOLPAC battery.

The machines are equipped with advanced HVDC connections and inverter technology and feature variable speed control. Real-time connectivity is standard on all E-Series machines for large trucks, providing fleet managers with detailed insights into operational efficiency through telematics.

The design of the machines reduces maintenance by having fewer moving parts, while the low noise level, zero emissions and the slimmest profile in their category make the E-Series ideal for low trucks in urban environments.

Designed for modern and fully electric transport on the last mile and specifically for vans and light commercial vehicles up to 12 m3, the new Thermo King E-100e and E-200e machines stand out from the market.

Thanks to its innovative reverse-cycle heat pump technology, the new E-200e offers best-in-class cooling performance, as well as improved power and reliability. Furthermore, the E-100e and E-200e models are equipped with intelligent control, which optimizes compressor speed based on ambient and cargo space conditions, thus increasing energy efficiency and performance.

“AxlePower, which has now been rolled out across the EMEA region, can reduce CO2 emissions from distribution trailers by up to 12 tons per year. Trailers equipped with AxlePower have covered over 950,000 km and generated over 46,500 kWh. Many of them have relied exclusively on this power generation system in very cold to hot conditions from Northern Europe to South Africa, without needing any grid power,” said Zanframundo.
