Smart logistics for the Olympic Games

Toyota Material Handling Europe will be participating in the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. With smart electric industrial trucks, TMHE aims to ensure the logistics and implementation of the competitions. The goal is to ensure zero-emission Games.

According to company management, Toyota Material Handling and Toyota Motor Europe plan to cooperate closely to provide a broad portfolio of sustainable solutions. The partnership will encompass the entire range of existing and future equipment and solutions – including counterbalanced forklifts, low-lift trucks, and high-lift trucks with a combination of electric and fuel cell technology. In this context, TMHE plans to present completely new, pioneering concepts for goods transport, thus contributing to the Olympic Games' mission of making all events carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative.

Toyota Material Handling Europe's parent company, Toyota Industries Corporation, is part of the Toyota Group and has been a member of the Olympic Partner (TOP) program since 2015. Since then, Toyota Motor Corporation has supported the Games with mobility solutions and services. "Although we operate in different business areas within the Toyota Group, it made sense for us to work together to bring the most powerful and comprehensive solutions to Paris," says TMHE President Ernesto Domínguez. Toyota Motor Europe and Toyota Material Handling Europe have previously participated in a joint event, "Beyond Zero City," an exhibition at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm, whose main sponsor is Toyota. Toyota technologies on display included autonomous electric vehicles, AI-assisted transport robots, and human-assistance robots.

Tom Schalenbourg, Director of Sustainable Development at Toyota Material Handling Europe, said: "In 2021, we joined the UN Race to Zero and committed to setting science-based targets to align our emissions with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement. By 2031, we aim to convert all our buildings, as well as our van and vehicle fleets, to 100% renewable energy and reduce emissions across our entire value chain by 55%, in line with the EU's 'Fit for 55' package."

Paris 2024 has also joined the UN Race to Zero and aims to reduce emissions by 50% compared to previous Games.
