was first Altenwerder Container Terminal (CTA) certified as climate-neutral in 2019, making it the world's first container handling facility with the corresponding certification mark. The certification for the Hamburg-based terminal has now been renewed.

During the certified period from January to December 2021, CO₂emissionsat the CTA (Container Terminal Approach) decreased significantly by 26.3 percent to approximately 11,000 tons. This development is primarily attributable to a substantial reduction in diesel consumption resulting from the ongoing conversion to electrically powered container transporters (Automated Guided Vehicles - AGVs). Nearly 90 percent of the AGVs used at the CTA now run on green electricity instead of diesel, and the plan is to convert all AGVs to fast-charging lithium-ion batteries by 2023. The 14 container cranes for waterside handling, the 52 fully electric gantry cranes in the container block storage area, and the four rail-mounted gantry cranes are also powered by green electricity.
Processes that still cause CO2 emissions todayareoffset through compensation certificates and climate protection projects.
