The German Federal Government has adopted a strategy for autonomous driving in road traffic in its cabinet, the focus of which, according to Transport Minister Volker Wissing, is to be on local public transport and freight transport.
The strategy aims to pave the way for autonomous driving in regular operation and create the conditions to further advance this technology and leverage its opportunities. "Autonomous driving is a key technology for innovative, clean, accessible, and affordable mobility"said Wissing. "With this strategy, we are creating the appropriate, innovation-friendly framework—a framework that must be brought to life by business and industry. Together, we will succeed in making autonomous driving something completely natural. (...) We are convinced: The future is autonomous."

Since 2021, regulations have been in place that allow the use of autonomous vehicles on public roads. Numerous research projects have since successfully tested autonomous driving systems in various applications. In the long term, autonomous driving could play a crucial role in addressing the existing shortage of professional drivers.
