New Silk Road: Straight through the middle

July 22, 2022

The middle way isn't always the "golden" one. Nevertheless, the Austrian transport service provider Gebrüder Weiss believes that the Middle Corridor through Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan is the right choice for freight traffic between Europe, Turkey, and China, and is continuing to expand its operations there.

The hope is also based on the fact that, once the latest COVID-19 "slump" has ended, GW can directly connect the geographically shorter route to the existing daily routes operated by Gebrüder Weiss between Western and Southeastern Europe, Turkey, and Tbilisi (Georgia). The company's logistics centers in Tbilisi and Almaty (Kazakhstan) are intended to serve as hubs for freight traffic. From there, goods will be transported by sea, land, or rail, including along the New Silk Road, to countries in Central Asia or as far as China.

“We expect that the demand for road transport will increase after the opening of the Chinese borders as part of the easing of coronavirus restrictions. Thanks to long-term contracts with reliable regional transport partners, we can offer our customers sufficient cargo space, regular services and acceptable transport times,” says Thomas Moser, Director and Regional Manager Black Sea/CIS at Gebrüder Weiss.
