160 t bridge on crane hook

June 2, 2026

Heavy lifting operations are scheduled for the first weekend in June at the bridges over the Kleine Emme river. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) had the first of two bridges lifted ashore at the end of 2025 and treated there against corrosion. Now it will be reinstalled, and the second steel truss bridge will be lifted out of the water.

This is intended to guarantee the load-bearing capacity and safety of the two listed steel truss bridges for another 40 years. Rail services will be restricted on two weekends in June 2026. Replacement buses will be provided.

At the confluence of the Kleine Emme and the Reuss rivers, the two twin bridges connect Lucerne and Emmen. These riveted steel truss bridges are listed historical monuments dating from 1922 and 1939. The corrosion protection on the bridges, which protects the steel girders, was last renewed in 1987.

During the repair work, trains will travel via a temporary bridge.
