Major order for signaling technology in Bergen

April 24, 2025

Stadler Bergen

Stadler has been awarded a highly lucrative contract for the planning, supply, and implementation of the signaling technology for the expansion of the Bybanen tramway in Bergen, Norway. The client is the state-owned project organization Bybanen Utbygging, a subsidiary of the Vestland county municipality.

This involves several planned expansion sections of the Bergen tram network towards the northern suburbs of Åsane and west to Loddefjord. The total contract volume amounts to a substantial 50 million euros. Stadler prevailed against well-known competitors in a public tender.

Long-standing partners

The railway manufacturer from Lake Constance has been a long-standing partner of the Bergen tram project. Twelve Stadler Vario trams were ordered as early as 2007. From 2008 onwards, Stadler's Signalling division was initially involved in the implementation of several sections of the route as a supplier of vehicle equipment and related trackside equipment.

From the second construction phase onwards, Stadler assumed overall responsibility for the entire signaling system. The system stability and the close, collaborative partnership with Bybanen Utbygging have repeatedly proven their worth.

Bybanen is placing this order for a high-performance, future-proof safety solution in the areas of train signaling systems, train control, and control center technology at safety integrity level SIL2 – with individual components meeting the highest safety and reliability level, SIL4. Stadler will supply, among other things, the train signaling systems with blocking circuits or wheel sensors, the train protection system for the track and vehicles, and the train identification technology.

In addition, signals and switch heaters, a fully equipped control center with multiple operator stations and training workstations including full simulation of the system will be supplied.

Complete control center

Stadler produces almost all components of the solution at its signaling technology site in Braunschweig. "We are delighted by the continued trust placed in us by Bybanen Utbygging. This contract award not only confirms the high availability and reliability of our technology, but also underlines the scalability and future-proof nature of our system – designed to meet the long-term requirements of modern urban infrastructure projects," said Albrecht Teich, Head of Signaling Technology at Stadler.
