Groundbreaking ceremony in Villmergen

June 29, 2022

Swiss Post operates various freight logistics centers in Switzerland and neighboring countries.its hub in Villmergen with four new buildings. These include a state-of-the-art automated high-bay warehouse with space for 23,000 pallets and 125,000 automated containers for smallparts.

Spread across five floors, it will create storage space equivalent to roughly eight football fields, and a photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof. Swiss Post is investing 137 million Swiss francs in the project and creating approximately 100 additional jobs. The groundbreaking ceremony took place recently.

Modern sorting technology

“The expansion and modernization will help us continue to provide industrial and commercial companies in Switzerland with comprehensive logistics solutions, thus simplifying their market access,” says Johannes Cramer, Head of Logistics Services and member of the Swiss Post Executive Board. Together with Roland Heizmann, Head of National Freight Logistics at Swiss Post, and Ueli Lütolf, Mayor of Villmergen, he broke ground on the project today. The new logistics center will create approximately 100 additional full-time positions – primarily for logistics specialists, facility maintenance staff, and administrative personnel. Mayor Ueli Lütolf is also enthusiastic: “Swiss Post is a major employer in our community. We are delighted that it is demonstrating its commitment to our business location by expanding its logistics center.”

With the new building, Swiss Post is expanding its warehouse space in Villmergen to a total of 57,000 square meters across five floors. The new warehouse will relieve pressure on Swiss Post's other logistics centers in Dintikon, Mägenwil, and Oftringen, which are reaching their capacity limits due to growing demand. Swiss Post plans to put the new building into operation at the beginning of 2025.

Swiss Post aims to be climate-neutral company-wide by 2040. It already operates some of the largest photovoltaic systems in Switzerland on the roofs of its buildings. Currently, 27 Swiss Post systems across Switzerland produce over 10 gigawatt-hours of solar power annually. Swiss Post is also installing a system on the roof of its new Villmergen warehouse, which will generate over 1,200 megawatt-hours of solar power per year. This will cover the majority of the warehouse's energy needs.
