A global IT outage today affected the Swiss air navigation service provider Skyguide to such an extent that air traffic capacity had to be temporarily reduced by 30 percent. Reportedly, the disruption was caused by a Windows update.
In the afternoon, air traffic control announced that the restrictions had been lifted. As an immediate precautionary measure, air traffic control had reduced capacity for transit traffic in Switzerland. At the request of Zurich Airport, no further approaches were temporarily accepted. Flights already in the air were not affected. Skyguide is operating without restrictions at Geneva Airport. Corporate IT was also partially affected. Safety in Swiss airspace was maintained at all times.
