Hamburg is working with the port authority HHLA and the German air traffic control service on a standard model for a "U-Space airspace" over the Hanseatic city, in which all air traffic data will be interconnected. The Ministry of Transport is supporting the €4 million project with 70 percent of the costs.
The pilot project «BLU-Space», a system for managing unmanned drone traffic in the context of existing flight movements by rescue flights, police and security organizations that take priority, started in December and is scheduled to be completed by May 2026.
The integration of drones into airspace via so-called "U-Spaces" must be collision-free and ensured, for example, by involving active emergency control centers in the vicinity. Within the relevant control zone, position data, data formats, and the exchange between different coordination centers (U-Space service providers) must be guaranteed.
Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economic Affairs and Innovation: "Our city offers the best conditions for the project. The complex infrastructure, consisting of dense urban settlement, large port and industrial areas, and inner-city airports, is ideally suited for it ."
