Vertiports are take-off and landing sites for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, air taxis, and drones. Siemens and a provider called Skyway now plan to jointly develop the energy supply, charging procedures, and infrastructure for flight operations.
The main objectives are research, development, planning, and participation in construction and operation, with each company contributing its own strengths and experience. According to a joint statement, Skyway has extensive expertise in airspace planning and management, air traffic control, and the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles, while Siemens possesses broad infrastructure expertise in electrification, electric vehicle charging, and facility operation.
"Sustainable energy solutions will be the foundation and a necessity for the adoption of urban air mobility with the electrification of eVTOL aircraft," says Clifford Cruz, CEO of Skyway. "Combining the resources and vision of our companies can influence vertiport construction and general UAM solutions across the industry and set new standards for modern transportation."
"We are pleased that Siemens can contribute to the development of urban airspace mobility," explains John Kasuda, Head of Airports at Siemens Smart Infrastructure North America. "The development and efficient operation of vertiports requires innovative solutions to meet anticipated demands such as fast aircraft turnaround times and a network of diverse landing facilities."
