DHL is expanding in Munich

August 2, 2022

Seven times over at once: The express delivery service is drastically expanding its capacity in the Bavarian capital with a new building at the airport. With 11,000 square meters of gross floor area, the location will be almost seven times larger than the warehouse space previously rented in the cargo center.

The volume of DHL Express shipments at the Munich Gateway has increased significantly in recent years, making the expansion of the site a logical step. "With the growth in import and export volumes driven by digitalization and globalization, the existing production area simply couldn't keep pace," explains Markus Reckling, Managing Director of DHL Express Germany, regarding the necessity of the €104 million investment project. "The construction of the new Gateway at Munich Airport is the next important step in our infrastructure plan. (...) The new building will allow us to offer improved service." Aircraft parked on the apron can be accessed directly from the new building via airside access. The Gateway also features two PUD (Pick-up and Delivery) lanes, which can handle up to 65 delivery vehicles simultaneously. This will result in a significant time advantage for customers in the Landsberg-Ingolstadt region, particularly for pickups and deliveries.

Groundbreaking ceremony in the Erding Moor

Groundbreaking ceremony for a "win-win project," as the head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, Florian Herrmann, calls it: for DHL Express, Munich Airport, for Bavaria, and for people worldwide who want to reliably send and receive urgent freight. Munich Airport is an engine for the region and for all of Bavaria.

During the building's planning phase, particular emphasis will be placed on the use of energy-saving materials and technologies. State-of-the-art LED technology will be used for all lighting, and a photovoltaic system generating 100 kWp will be installed to power building services, servers, and computers. Heat will be generated by heat pumps, supplemented by the FMG district heating supply. In addition, 32 charging points for electric vehicles are currently planned at the PUD (Pacific-Driven Deployment) jetways, along with two charging points for apron vehicles and charging points in the employee parking areas. Ten electric vehicles are already in operation at the DHL Express station in Unterschleissheim, and more will be added soon.

Currently, 72 DHL employees work at the Munich Gateway and are scheduled to move to the new building. The number of employees will more than double after completion. Furthermore, the new facility will meet the security requirements of the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) and thus receive the globally recognized TAPA Class A certification, the highest security level in air transport.
