The Layer Picker AMR was recently introduced as a new logistics component. It's an additional mobile assistant for the robot system, which uses its combined suction and clamp grippers to depalletize and palletize pallets layer by layer in warehouses, and then reassemble them into so-called rainbow pallets.
Chief Technology Officer K.Höfle
A layer picker, for example, ensures that from three pallets containing only one item—for example, one pallet each of chocolate, red wine, and ketchup—one (or more) pallets are picked, each containing exactly the amount of chocolate, red wine, and ketchup ordered by a customer. Layer pickers operate using suction and pressure and can accurately pick and reload 98 percent of items in the grocery store.
The previous Layer Picker solutions are equipped with fixed rail and conveyor technology in the storage area. AMRs replace the rigid rail and conveyor technology with their mobility should also facilitate the transition to fully automated layer picking . The manufacturer says the combined "Layer Picker + AMR" solution is scalable and can grow with increasing requirements. The overall performance of the system can be easily increased by gradually adding additional AMRs. "This is how we take intralogistics to the next level," says Kerstin Höfle, who is responsible for the automation portfolio and the development of new technology solutions in the Körber Business Area Supply Chain.
Layer Picker with AMR
In a typical warehouse architecture, the combination of Layer Picker and AMR can deliver up to 25 percent higher performance than traditional solutions, according to the expert, who received her doctorate from the Chair of Logistics Management at the University of St. Gallen in 2014 and has been Head of Technology at Körber since 2018.
