Solar system for refugees from Sudan

Gebrüder Weiss Uganda

More than 125,000 people live in the Palorinya refugee reception center, most of whom sought refuge from the civil war in neighboring Sudan. Gebrüder Weiss is transporting a solar system from Vorarlberg to Uganda free of charge, which will replace old diesel generators there.

A Catholic missionary, Erich Fischnaller, is conducting important development and reconstruction work in the Palorinya refugee settlement in northern Uganda. This includes providing young people with education and knowledge so they can build independent lives. With support from many sources, he has now established several training workshops where skilled trades such as carpentry, metalworking, and baking are taught. The electricity for the workshops was previously generated by old diesel generators – expensive and not very environmentally friendly. This is now changing: Photovoltaic system manufacturers and electrical engineering companies from Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein have donated all the necessary components for a high-performance photovoltaic (PV) system. It can be operated without connection to a public power grid (off-grid) and generates up to 200 kilowatts of electrical energy.

Gebrüder Weiss is responsible for transporting the solar system: "This is an exemplary initiative by regional companies that helps give local people a future perspective – and is also ecologically sound. Solar energy instead of fossil fuels: A sustainable aid project that we are happy to support," says Andreas Bilgeri, Head of Gebrüder Weiss Air & Sea Wolfurt. Packed in a 40-foot sea freight container, the solar system will be sent on its journey before Christmas. It will first travel by rail from Wolfurt to Rotterdam, then by ship to Mombasa, Kenya. The remaining overland journey to Uganda will be made by truck.

"I'm very pleased that with Gebrüder Weiss, we have a logistics company based in Vorarlberg and with international experience on our side. This simplifies the coordination processes and we can be sure that the solar system will arrive at its destination on time and safely," says Matthias Burtscher, lead coordinator of the campaign. On his premises, the donated PV system modules were assembled, tested, and then packaged before transport with the assistance of many volunteers.

"Solar Power for Palorinya" is a joint project of the Catholic Comboni Missionaries—represented locally by Brother Erich Fischnaller—and numerous companies, associations, and individuals from Vorarlberg, Liechtenstein, and South Tyrol. Fischnaller, a South Tyrolean native who began his missionary work in Africa 50 years ago, has been involved in this project since 2016.

The new solar system not only helps save on the high costs of diesel fuel, but also makes optimal use of Uganda's climatic conditions. Due to its location on the equator, the sun shines with consistently high intensity almost year-round.
